the story
When Changed Hearts Threaten an Economy
For years, Paul has preached the gospel in Ephesus.
People have believed.
Hidden practices have been confessed.
Magic scrolls worth a fortune have burned.
And Acts tells us that the Word of the Lord is prevailing mightily.
But changed beliefs eventually produce changed behavior.
People who no longer trust magic stop buying magic.
People who no longer worship idols stop spending money on idols.
And eventually, someone notices.
In Acts 19:21–41, a silversmith named Demetrius gathers the craftsmen of Ephesus and warns them that Paul’s message is threatening more than their religion.
It is threatening their livelihood.
Soon economic fear becomes religious outrage.
Outrage becomes a crowd.
And the crowd becomes a citywide riot as thousands pour into the theater shouting:
“Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
The invisible collision has become impossible to ignore.
Two kingdoms are colliding and now the old kingdom is fighting back.

Infographics
A Trade in Danger
An infographic that visually explains how the events of Acts 19:11-20 have affected the economy present in Acts 19:21-41. Being aware of this helps us to understand the motivations of Demetrius and the craftsmen as they marched toward the riot in the theater.

A Reactive Riot
When we see the spread of Christianity throughout Asia as Acts 19:10 describes, it is important to remember that belief is affecting buying patterns. Every person in the city and region that was won to Christ was one less person subject to the spiritual economy.

The Christian Response to the Riot
In life, we do not get to decide how other people respond or react to Christianity. We do get to choose how we respond and react to other people as Christians. To that understanding, it is important to remember how Christians respond when the world chooses to riot.

Behind the story
Kingdoms at War
Demetrius and the Silversmiths
Demetrius is not introduced as a theologian or government official. He is a silversmith whose trade is connected to Artemis. He gathers the craftsmen and warns them that Paul’s message is threatening both their business and the reputation of their goddess.
Great is Artemis of the Ephesians
Economic anxiety quickly becomes religious outrage. The crowd rushes into the theater and for about two hours shouts, “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!” The gospel has challenged something deeply woven into Ephesian identity.
The Theater Erupts
Thousands fill the theater, but Acts tells us that many people do not even know why they have gathered. Paul wants to enter, but disciples and friendly provincial officials urge him not to. Eventually the city clerk quiets the crowd and warns that the disorder could bring serious consequences.

Meet the People in the Story
Demetrius
A silversmith who recognizes that Paul’s message is threatening the trade connected with Artemis. He rallies the craftsmen by appealing to both their financial interests and their devotion to the goddess, helping ignite the confrontation that consumes the city.
The Apostle Paul
Paul has spent years preaching in Ephesus. Now he sees the consequences of that ministry reach beyond individual conversions. When the crowd fills the theater, Paul wants to enter and address them, but the disciples and some of his friends among the Asiarchs urge him not to go inside.
The Ephesian Crowd
Thousands are swept into the theater as confusion spreads through Ephesus. Some shout one thing and some another, while many do not even know why they have assembled. Eventually the crowd unites around one declaration: “Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!”
